Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode
The Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode (FHCM) is a French organisation dedicated to securing Paris’s role as the fashion capital. The organisation is responsible for organising and promoting Paris Fashion Week and Haute Couture Week. It also manages the so-called “Fashion Calendar” — a schedule and overview of which fashion houses present where and when.

Les Chambres
The organisation is divided into trade associations, each representing a different sector of fashion:
- The Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture is the core of the organisation and regulates and represents the haute couture fashion houses.
- The Chambre Syndicale du Prêt-à-Porter des Couturiers et des Créateurs de Mode, also known as the Chambre Syndicale de la Mode Féminine, focuses on women’s ready-to-wear collections and represents designers and fashion houses that produce these.
- The Chambre Syndicale de la Mode Masculine is exclusively dedicated to menswear.
Paris Fashion Week
Paris Fashion Week takes place four times a year: Menswear Fall/Winter in January and Spring/Summer in June, and Womenswear Fall/Winter in March and Spring/Summer in September. Paris is one of the “Big Four” fashion weeks, alongside Milan, New York, and London. Here, the selected designers and fashion houses regulated by the FHCM showcase their latest collections to the public in Paris, presenting their vision for the next season’s styles and trends.
Haute Couture
Haute means “high” in French, and couture means “sewing.” Therefore, the term as a whole can be understood as sewing of the highest standards and quality. It refers to handmade clothing, refined down to the smallest detail. Haute couture is extreme extravagance, prioritising artistic expression over practical wear. Haute couture fashion houses follow a strict set of rules to earn this prestigious status.
The FHCM controls which houses and designers are allowed to call themselves haute couture. The term is legally protected under French law. The requirements for haute couture houses are:
The fashion house’s atelier must be located in Paris. (a requirement for official members)
At least 15 full-time employees.
A minimum of 50 original designs per collection, including looks suitable for both day and evening wear.
Handmade using traditional couture techniques.
Customers must be offered made-to-order designs with multiple fittings.
Collections must be presented twice a year at Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week.
Haute Couture also has an official event, separate from the traditional Fashion Week. This event is held twice a year in Paris: Spring/Summer collections are presented in January, and Autumn/Winter collections are presented in July.
In 1927, the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture founded a prestigious school called the École de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne. This school exists to train promising talents in haute couture techniques.
Members
The FHCM has a range of members whom the organisation represents. These members receive information, advice, networking opportunities, as well as legal, social, economic, structural, technological, and marketing services. The organisation aims to support both emerging brands and designers, as well as established fashion houses.
Official members are fashion houses that meet all the organisation’s requirements.
Corresponding members are international fashion houses that meet the requirements but operate outside of France.
Guest members are fashion houses and designers invited to showcase their collections in Paris. These are selected through an application review process. New guest members are added each season. Guests have the opportunity to become official or corresponding members if they present collections four seasons in a row and meet the criteria.
