The Met Gala
On the first Monday of May each year, the biggest fashion event takes place — the Met Gala. This prestigious event is a fundraising benefit for the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and marks the opening of the Institute’s spring exhibition.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the largest museums in the world, with 19 different departments. Among these is The Costume Institute, also known as the Anna Wintour Costume Center, which is dedicated to fashion and costume. This department is the only one at the museum that funds itself, making the Met Gala essential to its operation.
The Met Gala, also known as The Met Ball, features a themed dress code each year that guests are expected to follow. For example, the theme for Met Gala 2025 was Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, which focused on menswear, Black culture, dandyism, and tailoring. The theme of the event also shapes the accompanying exhibition at the museum.
access
The Met Gala is an invitation-only event that welcomes between 450 and 800 fashion moguls and superstars. These guests are selected based on their influence and relevance. At the forefront of the guest list stands Vogue’s editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour.
Anna Wintour, along with a selected committee, curates a guest list featuring prominent figures from film, music, fashion, art, culture, and sport. This committee acts as ambassadors for the year’s fundraiser, attracting high-profile guests and sponsorships. They also serve as hosts on the evening itself and take part in the social and media-covered portion of the event, helping to generate publicity around the entire occasion. The Met Gala 2025 committee included A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, Lewis Hamilton, and Colman Domingo.
Despite receiving an invitation, attending still comes at a cost — $75,000 for an individual ticket and $350,000 for a table of ten, with all proceeds supporting the Costume Institute. Typically, the ticket is paid for by brands and fashion houses, with a house often purchasing a table and inviting guests—who must be approved by Anna Wintour.
The fashion
Guests are dressed by the brand that sponsors their ticket, working closely together to develop a personalised outfit that suits both the guest and the theme. Brands and fashion houses pay for the exposure and compete with one another as their guests take to the red carpet.
Outfits at the Met Gala often comment on current global issues. These are couture looks: statement pieces, extravagant gowns, and avant-garde fashion. It is a grand fashion show, with the elite as models and the rest of the world as the audience.
Behind the curtain
After the red carpet, the public is no longer welcome — and neither are phones.
Following the red carpet, guests enjoy cocktails, casual conversation, and a preview of the Costume Institute’s exhibition. This is followed by a formal dinner, with a seating arrangement strategically designed to create connections. The evening also features entertainment from at least one major performer.
For the elite, it is an essential night. There is prestige in being a Met Gala guest, and it’s all about making a strong impression and networking. The event offers the potential to form valuable relationships, partnerships, and artistic collaborations.
