Work in fashion: Design and creation
Creative director
The role of creative director at a fashion brand is the highest creative position.
The creative director is responsible for the brand’s artistic direction and ensures a consistent aesthetic across the brand, collections, and campaigns. The creative director does not necessarily design the clothing but is responsible for making sure the creative expression reflects the brand’s identity and vision — and also serves as the face of the brand.
Designer
A designer can either be self-employed or employed by a fashion house. The designer is responsible for conceptualizing and creating clothing designs with an aesthetic appeal that can be marketed. Everything from the design’s inspiration to materials and colors is up to the designer. Together with pattern makers and manufacturers, the designer ensures that the final product meets expectations. There are different types of designers, each with their own focus:
Clothing designer: Works with garments for men, women, and children.
Accessories designer: Designs everything from bags to jewelry that complement clothing.
Bridal designer: Focuses on wedding dresses and festive attire for weddings.
Costume designer: Creates designs for theatre, film, TV, and other performances. Together with directors and performers, they develop designs that reflect a specific narrative.
Footwear designer: Specializes in shoes and other footwear.
Knitwear designer: Specializes in knitted garments.
Lingerie designer: Focuses on intimate apparel such as underwear and sleepwear.
Sportswear designer: Creates designs for athletic activities and sports performance.
Swimwear designer: Works with the design of swimwear.
Fashion illustrator
An illustrator is responsible for visualizing the designer’s concepts on paper or in digital renderings before they are produced in physical form.
Creating these sketches and renderings requires artistic skill, as well as strong communication abilities to translate the designer’s ideas into a visual language.
Texstiledesigner
The textile designer is responsible for developing textiles that can be used in clothing.
Traditional techniques such as weaving and knitting, as well as modern methods like machine printing, are used to create new patterns and colors.
Graphic designer
A graphic designer creates the brand’s surrounding visual elements, such as logos, website layouts, and marketing materials. In collaboration with the textile designer, they can also design patterns and prints. These visual elements are essential to the company’s aesthetic, and it is important that they reflect the brand’s identity.
Trend forecaster
Trend forecasting involves analyzing current and future trends to give designers an idea of what should be prioritized or deprioritized. They report on everything from specific items to various colors that are expected to trend. A deep understanding of consumer behavior is essential to accurately anticipate future demands.
Pattern maker
A pattern maker translates designs and sketches into sewing patterns — essentially the blueprint of a garment. This template is used to cut fabric and sew it together to achieve the desired proportions and sizes. It requires an extremely technical understanding of mathematics and measurements, as even a single millimeter can significantly affect the garment’s appearance and fit.
